Ask Good Questions

One of the biggest mistakes a physician can make on an interview is to not ask questions. Although you may have met the hospital CEO, the physicians of the practice, and some of the other administrators who have answered a lot of questions about the job, it is still a shock when they ask the interviewing physician, “Do you have any questions for us?” and there is silence.

Asking questions is not just about your needs and satisfying your curiosity. It also shows your capability to think critically about the practice, the hospital, and your role in the organization. It is a time for you to show off your interest and your insight; and it is a key way to make you stand apart from the competition.

Below are five questions that are good for almost any interview, plus a bonus question that will really make you stand out:

1. What's the biggest change your group has gone through in the last year?
2. One year from now, if I get the job, what will earn me a "gold star" or “top recognition”? What are the key accomplishments you'd like to see in my role over the next year?
3. What types of physicians are successful here? What types of physicians are not?
4. What's one thing that's key to your success that somebody from outside the practice wouldn't know about?
5. What keeps you up at night? What's your biggest worry?

And here's a bonus question to really demonstrate how much value you're going to add to your group:
* How can I get a Thank You / big bonus / Boss' recognition at the end of the year? How can I best achieve that?

Why is this question so good? It shows you're thinking about others, not just yourself. It shows that you want to help the team achieve. And it gets your future boss thinking about how beneficial it is going to be to have somebody like you on the team helping them achieve their goals.
